School starts soon. but there’s still plenty of summer weather left. We continue
our two-part series on summer eye care with five more ways to protect your
eyes this summer:
l.Whether it’s in the pool. lake. or ocean. you should wear a pair of goggles. Pool
operators often increase chlorine levels to counteract the rislng incidence of skin
infection during the summer. This can lead to eye irritation. as well as the other
contaminants found in natural bodies of water that may hurt your eyes.
2.Wash your hands and avoid rubbing eyes. Washing your hands is crucial to
avoid contracting eye-related conditions such as conjunctivitis. which can be
developed by touching something that someone else has touched after they
rubbed their eyes.
3.Start protecting your children‘s eyes now. Children are far more likely to spend
time playing outside during the summer and you want to make sure they are
protected. The solution is as easy as applying regular sunscreen. especially to
the face. and adding a hat with a wide brim and comfortable sunglasses.
4.Get the right amount of sleep. When you are tired. your eyes are more likely to
feel dry. This dryness encourages you to rub your eyes to stimulate the lacrimal
gland. which increases the likelihood of exposure to irritants and diseases.
5.Stay hydrated. It is easier for people to become dehydrated during the hot
summer weather. and this can affect eyes as well. Dehydration leads to difficulty
in producing tears. which dries out the eyes and can lead to other vision
problems. Drink at least two liters of water each day to prevent the negative
effects of dehydration.
